Business Families Centre at Sauder School of Business

The Business Families Centre at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia, works with business families to address their most complex challenges. Working at the intersection of family enterprise and business acumen, Sauder’s Business Families Centre advocates education as the central path to success for all enterprising families. Amongst other programming, Sauder hosts the renowned Family Legacy Series, sharing the business stories of great enterprising families. Sauder’s partnership with the Institute of Family Enterprise Advisors (IFEA) has successfully established the first and only family enterprise advisor designation in the world.

  • The Art of Family Governance – Engaging in Family Councils & Meetings

    To help you develop and conduct effective family councils & meetings and to get active participation from members in the governance of the family.

    For all Business Family Members, whether working in the family enterprise or not: owner-founder, CEO, spouse, in-law, young adult, successor generation. Provides stakeholders involved with enterprising families with a unique opportunity to understand how to develop and conduct effective family meetings to manage changes across generations and grow a stronger family.

    Objectives

    1. To help define ‘who is family?’ in a family enterprise system
    2. To explore how to get active participation from members in the governance of the family, through family meetings and councils, and how this relates to the governance of the ownership of the business and other family assets
    3. To practice using processes and tools to develop family forums and address and resolve important family issues

    Format

    Online multimedia module featuring animated concepts, reflection sections, case study, videos, optional audio explanations and dialogues, self-assessments, activities, suggested readings, as well as private discussion and sharing space. Requires an Internet connection. This module may also be accessed via handheld devices (iPhone, iPad etc.).
